Coughing in children

Coughing is a common occurrence in childhood and is generally the body's natural response to something irritating the airways. It's usually mild and passes within a short time.

What Are the Common Causes in Children?

  • Common viral infections such as the common cold
  • Mucus draining down the back of the throat (postnasal drip)
  • Increased exposure to germs in crowded settings such as school or daycare

What Can Parents Do?

Making sure the child drinks enough fluids, keeping indoor air humid, and ensuring adequate rest are among the steps that can support general comfort. A pediatrician should always be consulted before giving a child any cough product or supplement.

When Should You Consult a Pediatrician?

If a cough lasts longer than three weeks, becomes severe enough to make breathing difficult, occurs together with high fever, or you notice a clear decline in your child's general condition, consulting a pediatrician is recommended.
