Research & Development at MESA

Every product begins with a question: can it be done better?

01

Why MESA Develops Products

MESA doesn't develop a product simply because a similar one already exists in the market. Every project starts from the same question: can this be done better?

That means looking closely at the existing market — its alternatives, its strengths, and where it falls short — and asking whether a better formulation, a better product experience, or a more relevant response to customer needs represents a genuine opportunity.

It's a deliberate, unhurried way of working, focused on whether a product is truly worth developing, not just whether it could be made.

02

Where Product Ideas Start

Product development at MESA begins with the market itself — research, competitor analysis, and a close look at the alternatives already available to customers.

The team weighs the full picture rather than judging an opportunity on a single characteristic: price positioning, product quality, formulation, packaging, and how the product is presented as a whole.

“Every new product begins with a need.”

03

From Idea to Formulation

Seven stages carry a concept from an early observation to a finished formulation.

  1. 01

    Market & Need

Understanding where a real customer need meets a gap in the market.

  2. 02

    Competitor & Alternative Analysis

Studying existing products and alternatives to see where they fall short.

  3. 03

    Product Concept

Shaping a clear proposition: what the product is, and who it's for.

  4. 04

    Formulation Development

Evaluating ingredients, dosage, usage limits and the target age group against the product's purpose, and developing the formulation.

  5. 05

    Sample Evaluation

Testing taste, product experience and intended effect against expectations.

  6. 06

    Revision

Returning to the formulation whenever a sample doesn't yet meet what was intended.

  7. 07

    Final Product Decision

Confirming the product is ready, with commercial feasibility considered alongside quality.

04

Formulation Development

Formulation decisions take shape through MESA's own multidisciplinary evaluation. Each formulation is developed by weighing the purpose of its ingredients, dosage, daily usage limits, target age group, taste and product experience together.

More than one formulation alternative is often prepared before a final direction is chosen — the goal is the right formulation, not the first one.

05

Sample & Product Evaluation

Once formulation alternatives are ready, samples are evaluated as a whole — taste, product experience, and how well the sample matches its intended effect for the people it's designed for.

For lozenges specifically, taste plays an important role — but it's never the only measure. Technical suitability and packaging considerations are weighed alongside it.

Cost is part of the conversation, but it isn't the starting point. Product quality and suitability come first; commercial feasibility is considered as the formulation moves toward a final decision.

06

The Feedback Loop

MESA systematically records and evaluates feedback from consumers, pharmacists and healthcare professionals. This feedback forms an important source of insight for developing and improving products.

Re-Evaluation

Re-evaluation feeds back into real-world feedback — the cycle continues, and it's one of the clearest ways a product keeps improving after launch.

Case Study — Kids Lozenge

Development StatusSample Revision

A first sample is not a final decision.

MESA's Kids lozenge is currently in development, not yet a finished product. The first sample achieved the taste characteristics the team was aiming for — but when MESA evaluated the intended product experience, the result was assessed as limited.

Rather than move forward with a sample that didn't fully meet what was intended, the team decided the formulation should be strengthened. That decision sent the project back into formulation — a new sample is now being prepared for re-evaluation.

It's a small example of a larger principle: MESA doesn't simply accept the first acceptable sample. If a product can be better, the process goes back into development.

08

Packaging & Product Experience

MESA generally develops its own packaging designs, and treats packaging as part of the product rather than a separate marketing exercise.

Formulation, product experience, packaging and customer feedback move together — the goal is a product that reads as coherent from the formulation itself to the box it arrives in, consistent with the brand it belongs to.

09

The Final Decision

A product moves toward its final decision only once its formulation, product experience and packaging are considered ready — commercial feasibility and cost are evaluated at this stage, alongside everything that came before it, not instead of it.

That order matters: product quality and suitability are established first; cost and commercial feasibility inform when and how a product is ready to move forward.

What Comes Next

MESA's direction is to keep developing more of its own brands, expand its portfolio, and pursue more differentiated, more innovative formulations.

Domestic production is a preference MESA values as part of its growth vision. Alongside this, MESA continues to improve its existing products and bring new products to market that better respond to market needs.

Development never really stops.
