Scalp flaking

Flaking on the scalp isn't a diagnosis on its own — it's an appearance that can be a shared symptom of several different conditions. Understanding what's behind it can help in finding the right approach.

Different Possible Causes of Flaking

  • Dandruff — one of the most common causes
  • A dry scalp
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Other skin conditions, such as eczema
  • Product buildup

How to Approach It Based on the Cause

If the flakes look greasy and yellowish, seborrheic dermatitis may be involved; if they look fine and dry, a dry scalp or dandruff may be the more likely explanation. When additional signs such as itching or redness are present, consulting a dermatologist is the most reliable way to identify the underlying cause.

When Should You Consult a Specialist?

If flaking persists despite regular care, or is accompanied by symptoms such as redness or intense itching, consulting a dermatologist is recommended.
