Hoarseness in children

Hoarseness in children is a fairly common, usually temporary condition, particularly after loud shouting or extended periods of talking.

What Are the Common Causes in Children?

  • Shouting, crying, or talking loudly for extended periods
  • Upper respiratory infections such as the common cold
  • Dry indoor air

What Can Parents Do?

Encouraging the child to speak in a normal tone rather than shouting, supporting adequate fluid intake, and keeping indoor air humid are among the steps that can support general comfort.

When Should You Consult a Pediatrician?

If hoarseness lasts longer than a week, is accompanied by difficulty breathing, or has no clear cause, consulting a pediatrician is recommended.
